History of Sweet Thunder

Colby Girls Fast Pitch Association (CGFPA) "Sweet Thunder" is a highly competitive ASA girls fast pitch softball organization based in Colby, Kansas.  We compete in tournaments throughout Kansas and Nebraska, with teams in 10/U, 12/U, 14/U, 16/U, and 18/U age brackets.  A few years prior to 1992 a traveling fast pitch team was organized consisting of approximately 13 young ladies from our community.  In 1992 CGFPA was formally established and continiues to be a viable organization promoting the growth and sport of girls fast pitch softball.  Today our membership consists of more than 50 young ladies and their parents.  CGFPA cooperates with the Colby City Recreation Program and is registered with the Amateur Softball Association and the Kansas ASA program.

Through the years, Sweet Thunder teams have brought recognition to our community by their accomplishments--regional champions, state champions, recruitment to a college team, contributions to the Colby High School team.  Some alumni are even coaching or working in other capacities to promote the growth and sport of fast pitch.  Colby has been host for the State Tournaments.  In the Class B State Tournament in 2001, the Colby Sweet Thunder team finished second.  In 2002, our 10/Under team won the Silver Bracket in Class C State Championship.  In 2003, the young 18/U team took 7th at the ASA National Western Championship. This is a fine example of how commitment, dedication, and hard work results in success on the part of our local young ladies.
